BRING DOWN THE BIRDS – 07:00 PM June 3, 2024

Listen to episode

Rhea

On tonight’s episode of Bring Down the Birds, Dr Watson shines the spotlight on the Rhea, a large Sth American flightless bird that shares many similarities with the Ostrich and the Emu. These birds are all ratites, as well as Kiwis and Cassowaries. Birds that can fly have a sternum bone with a keel – a necessary structure that allows for the attachment of large pectoral muscles. Ratites, like the Rhea, do not have a keeled sternum bone and have small pectoral muscles. Their wings are useful for steering and balance when running and zig zagging away from danger but they are useless for flight. Male Rheas also use their wings during courtship behaviour.
